Speaker: Dr Zafar Iqbal Jadoon

The School of Governance and Society in collaboration with ORIC organized an evening with Dr. Zafar Iqbal Jadoon on the topic, “Governance in the Age of Complexity,” on 23 August 2019. This event was organized at the initiative of Dr. Aisha Azhar, Assistant Professor, SGS. A number of UMT Faculty and students of SGS attended.

Dr. Jadoon has had a special association with ILM since its inception. He did his PhD and MPA from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles; postdoctoral research fellowship in Human Resource Management at University of Stirling, Scotland, United Kingdom. He has taught at University of Houston as adjunct professor of HRD. Apart from his extensive international experience, Dr. Jadoon has taught at the Punjab University as well as the UCP.

On 23 August at UMT, Dr. Jadoon spoke about governance in the age of complexity. He explained that the Renaissance was called the Age of Adventure. The seventeenth-century Age of Reason, the eighteenth century the Age of Enlightenment. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries were ages of ideology and analysis, respectively. As for the twenty-first century, Stephen Hawking called it the Age of Complexity.

Science and technology have progressed to the point that humans can create or clone life, create Artificial Intelligence, and discover new galaxies, but at the same time people continue to suffer from extreme hunger, disease, inequality and poverty, from pollution and climate change and terrorism. Politics of power has contributed substantially to this predicament. At a time when our power of creation, matched by our power of destruction, has reached such levels, need for a governance model that takes into account this complexity is imperative. Such a model will have a trans-disciplinary approach to solve the problems the society faces.

Dr. Jadoon’s talk generated a lively interactive discussion wherein the UMT faculty and SGS students participated actively.
